La Crosse -- Veronica Schmidt, 86, died Feb. 8, 2000, at Rush County Nursing Home, La Crosse. She was born May 15, 1913, at Pfeifer, the daughter of John and Margaret Urban Degenhardt.

A resident of Pfeifer and Hays for most of her life, she moved to the nursing home in 1988. She belonged to St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Hays.

On Sept. 7, 1931, she married Isidor Schmidt at Pfeifer. He died July 28, 1988.

Survivors include: two sons, Vernon F., Hays, and Robert, Lincoln, Neb.; nine grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Isidor Jr. and Stanley; seven brothers, Andrew, John, Jacob, Casper, Martin, George and William Degenhardt; and seven sisters, Mary Basgall, Eva Pfannenstiel, Magdalena Befort, Rose Pfannenstiel, Anna Marie Zimmerman, Clara Hartman and infant Catherine Degenhardt.

Vigil service will be at 7:30 p.m. today at Cline's Mortuary, Hays. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Hays, with Father Michael Suchnicki presiding. Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. today and 8:30 to 9:45 a.m. Thursday at the mortuary. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Hays.

Memorials may be sent to the St. Joseph Parish Service Center Fund, in care of the mortuary.
