He graduated from the St. Joseph Military Academy and Fort Hays State University. He was a retired president of Hill-Thomas Lime and Cement Co., Belleville, and was secretary treasurer of the board. He was a member of the AF & AM Scottish Rite Bodies, the Ainad Shrine, and the 326 Club. He was a past board member of East Side Associated Industry, a past president of Cahokia Lumberman Association, all of Belleville.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy J. (Harrington) Schmidt; his mother, Veronica (Degenhardt) Schmidt; two sons, William R. and Thomas J., Belleville; a daughter, Susan K. Strecker, St. Louis; three brothers, Vernon, Hays, Stanley, Great Bend, and Robert, Lincoln, Neb.; and 10 grandchildren.
Services are at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Kurrus Funeral Home, Belleville; burial in the Mount Hope Cemetery, Belleville. Masonic services are at 7:30 p.m. today. Visitation is after 3 p.m.
The family suggests memorial contributions to the Hospice of Southern Illinois, to the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children, or to the Belleville West Scholarshop Fund.
