Sylvester Degenhardt, 82, 508 E. 14th, died Thursday, March 26, 1998, at Hays Medical Center. He was born Nov. 20, 1915, in Pfeifer, to John 1. and Emma (Basgall) Degenhardt.

He married Helen Pfeifer and she died June 14, 1968. He then married Ida Weaver on August 23, 1969.

He was a custodian for Hays USD489 and a farmer. He was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church and the Eagle's Lodge, both of Hays.

Survivors include his wife, of the home; a son, Donald, Russell; a daughter, Leona Bybee, Belton, Mo.; three brothers, John, Adolph, and Dale, all of Hays; a sister, Regina Basgall, Hays; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Twila Mae, two brothers, Victor and Walter, and a sister, Alvina Bieker.

Services were Saturday at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church with Father Beryl Gibson officiating; burial in St. Joseph Cemetery, Hays. Memorials are suggested to the church.
