He was a cook at Thomas More Prep-Marian High School for 22 years until he retired in 1982. He was a World War II Army veteran of the 28th Infantry Division. He was captured during the Battle of the Bulge and was a prisoner of war in Stalag 9-B in Bad Orb, Germany. He was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, VFW, American Legion, Knights of Columbus Council No. 1325 and the Eagle's Lodge.
Survivors include his wife, of the home; three sons, Terry of Manhattan, Larry of Dodge City, Gary of Stanton, Texas; three daughters, Pat Windholz of Hays, Shirley Ruder of WaKeeney, Linda Zachman of Dodge City; six brothers, Victor, Clarence, Frank, Marvin, all of Hays, Julie of Billings, Mont., Walter of Longmont, Colo.; three sisters, Marcella Eickbush of Laramie, Wyo., Martina Staab, Agnes Miller, both of Hays; nine grandchildren
He was preceded in death by two brothers.
Services were at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Fathers Brad Sterrett and Earl Meyer officiated; burial with military honors by the American Legion and VFW in St. Joseph Cemetery.
The family suggests memorials to the Coronary Care Unit at St. Anthony Hospital. Casket Bearers were: Greg Windholz, Vernon Wasinger, Rick Pfannenstiel, Chris Ruder, Leon Staab and Ron Pfannenstiel. Hays Memorial Chapel.
