J.D. was born on February 14, 1923, in a shack two miles north of Bloomfield, Montana, the son of Samuel D. and Clara Belle (Hulvey) Whitmer. He attended schools in Bloomfield and attended Dawson County High School in Glendive. Following his high school education, Jeff attended Dawson County Junior College and Montana State University (now called the University of Montana). He was unable to finish his degree in psychology as he was drafted into the U.S. Army in November 1944 and served in the European Theatre of World War II. Jeff served under General Patton in the 90th Infantry Division, 359 Regiment, 3rd Battalion. They were called the "Tough Hombres" or " TO's". Following his discharge from the military in August 1946, Jeff returned to Bloomfield where he farmed, flew his airplane, did mechanical work and lathe work for many people. He was united in marriage to Dixie DeVries on June 21, 1963 at the Evangelical United Brethren Church in Glendive.
Jeff helped and loved many, many children and they were his main concern, right up to the end. He will be missed by many people.
Jeff was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, McKinley, Boone, Tom, Ted, Kermit, Derby and Ras; his sisters, Sylvia Nelson, Roxie Karls and Santa Hrubes.
Survivors include his wife, Dixie, of Bloomfield; his son, Gary Whitmer and his wife Maureen of Bloomfield, Montana; grandchildren, Heather, Daniel and Kenneth; numerous nieces, nephews and their families.
