Sylvia Nelson died Wednesday, Sept 5, 1990 at the Glendive Medical Center after a long struggle with breast cancer. She was born a daughter of Samuel D. and Clara Belle (Hulvey) Whitmer, near Beach, ND. She moved to Bloomfield, Montana, with her parents in 1919 and attended grade school there.

After attending Teacher's College in Dillon, Montana, she taught school at Rose Valley near Vida, and Centerville School north of Lindsay. In 1938 she married E. Morris Nelson in Sidney. She and her husband farmed northeast of Lindsay. In her later years, she began playing the chord organ, sounding out melodies by ear. She particularly loved old hymns and lively country songs. She enjoyed children and loved to tell them stories with happy endings. She was happiest living on the farm, raising crops and hogs.

Sylvia was preceded in death by her husband in 1969, and by five brothers, Kermit, Mac, Boone, Derby and Tom Whitmer.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Ellis (Rosalie) Wyman of Glendive; a son, Mark Edwin Nelson of Lindsay; two sisters, Roxie Karls of Billings, Santa Hrubes of Bloomfield; and four granddaughters, Laura Music, Rebecca Reinhardt, and Brenda Garness, all of Billings, and Neva Wyman of Coral Springs, Florida; and eight great-grandchildren.
