La Crosse -- Cleopha Berens, 81, died Dec. 25, 1997, at Rush County Health Care Center.

She was born Sept. 20, 1916, at Loretto, the daughter of John W. and Mary Degenhardt Basgall.

A La Crosse resident since 1965, formerly of Gove and Rush Counties. She worked as a cook at Herman's Rest Home and at Rush County Hospital. She and her husband also had farmed in Gove and Rush Counties until moving to LaCrosse. She belonged to St. Michael's Catholic Church, LaCrosse.

On Oct. 27, 1936, she married Ben Berens at Vincent. He survives.

Other survivors include: two sons, Leroy J., Sachsi, Texas, and Ronald J., Great Bend; a brother, Edward Basgall, LaCrosse; a sister, Alice P/hnnensliel, Hays; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Jerome, Bill and Sylvanis Basgall; and two sisters, JoAnn Weber and Hilda Stremel.

Rosary will be at 7 p.m. today at Janousek Funeral Home Chapel, LaCrosse. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturdny at St. Michael's Catholic Church, LaCrosse, with Fathers Benjamin Martin and Julian Haas presiding. Burial will be in LaCrosse City Cemetery.

Memorials may be sent to the church or to the Alzheimer's Association, both in care of the funeral home.
