Our community was dreadfully shocked when news reached here that Clarence Kleiber had succumbed to injuries received while swimming in Lake Winnebago. On Saturday with a friend, he had gone for a swim in the lake near Waverly beach. Taking a dive his head struck bottom and he emerged in a semi-conscious state and was rescued by his friend. He partially regained consciousness as he was rushed to St. Elizabeth hospital at Appleton. Little hope for his recovery was entertained when an ???????????? revelled he had suffered three broken vertebrae in the back and his spinal cord was crushed. He lingered until Sunday evening when death came to his relief.

The decedent was born in our city April 11, 1913, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Kleiber. He graduated from St. Mary’s school and then attended our high school, graduating with honors in 1930.

His activity in ?? section with the high school annual created a desire for journalism work as a vocation and he entered the University of Wisconsin and completed a course in journalism there graduating in 1935. Soon thereafter he joined the editorial staff of the Appleton Post-Crescent where he had been employed since and was highly regarded for his energy and sincere work.
Surviving her are his grief-stricken mother, two brothers, Frank and Wilbert, and a sister, Mrs. E. G. Schlei all of Brillion.

Funeral services were held at St. Mary’s church. A solemn requiem high mass was said by the Rev. M. J. Kraus, pastor, assisted by Rev. Alfred E. Pritzl, Mishicot, an uncle and the Rev. Hubert Kleiber, Oshkosh, a cousin. Interment was in the parish cemetery.
