Julius Richard Gugler , the first child of Johann Heinrich "Henry" and Frederike Gugler, was born in Germany and later emigrated to the United States in 1853. He grew up in New York and Washington, DC where he learned the art of engraving. He moved to Milwaukee in 1869 where he eventually co-founded a lithography business, H. Gugler & Sons, with his father and brother Henry, Jr. in 1878. More information may be found in the memorial of his father.

Julius and his wife, Bertha, had four children, Frida, Gretchen, Oswald and Ralph.
