After graduating from Houston High School in 1943, Mr. Baty served in Europe in the infantry during the Battle of the Bulge in World War II. He was awarded two Bronze Stars and two Purple Hearts.
After the war, he and his wife, Maxine, graduated from Southwest Missouri State University. He received his master's degree from Northwestern University and his Ph.D. from the University of Southern California.
After teaching at Emporia State in Kansas and USC, he accepted the professorship at Arizona State University College of Business, where he retired as emeritus professor in 1987.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers and two sisters.
Surviving are his wife of nearly 61 years of the home at Tempe, Ariz.; two sons, Dr. Ben Baty of Tulsa, Okla., and Sgt. Todd Baty of Tempe, Ariz.; siblings, Montie Baty, Mary Jo Temple and Carolyn Pierce of Kansas, Kermit Baty, Larry Baty, Bonnie Maxwell, Imogene Porter, Johnnie Lou Mahan and Kay Crisp of Missouri and Wilma Campbell of Colorado; and six grandchildren.
Graveside services were Feb. 29 at Green Acres Cemetery at Scottsdale, Ariz. Memorial services to celebrate his life were March 1 at Arizona Community Church in Tempe, Ariz.
