John Thomas Riddle was born December 9, 1900 in Columbus, Ohio, the fourth of eleven children to John Milton and Sarah Alice (Preston) Riddle. He departed this life October 3, 1981 in Los Angeles, California.

He was married to Helen Wheeler Riddle, and they were parents of four children: Joanne, John Jr, Paul, and Judith.

John attended the University of Southern California, where he played on the first football teams to be invited to play in the Rose Bowl, the fullback himself in 1923 became the first black man to play in a Rose Bowl game. He graduated in 1925 with a degree in architectural engineering.

He retired in 1965 from the Los Angeles Board of Education after twenty years.

John was an active member of the Western Avenue Golf Club, the Griffith Park Men's Golf Club, the Los Angeles Municipal Golf Association and the Southern California Publinks Golf Association, and a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and the Trojan Alumni Association.

He leaves to mourn his passing, his children, Joanne R. Jefferson, John Thomas Riddle, Jr., Paul A. Riddle and Judith R. Kealing; his brothers and sisters, Loretta Chinn, Hazel Riddle, Geraldine Riddle, Florida Ware, Dwight Riddle and Ralph Riddle; his grandchildren, Charmaine Jefferson, Anthony Riddle, Gary Jefferson, Shawn Henderson, Debbie Riddle, Pamela Todd, Christopher Kealing, Michael Kealing, Spring Riddle, Dialo Riddle, Quinn Alana Riddle and Ryan Riddle; and great grandchildren, Song Riddle and Raymond Henderson, Jr.

He is greatly missed by his family and friends.
