TITO GOBBI, 68, ITALIAN BARITONE:- Tuesday, March 6, 1984

Italian baritone Tito Gobbi, who sang and directed in the world's great opera houses, died last night at his home in Rome, his family said. He was 68.

Born Oct. 24, 1915, in Bassano del Grappa in northern Italy's Vicenza province, Mr. Gobbi first gained international attention when he won the 1936 international music festival.

He made his operatic debut in 1937 as Germont Pere in Giuseppe Verdi's La Traviata at the Teatro Adriano in Rome, and critics hailed "the perfect timbre of his baritone."

It was the start of a career that would include appearances at such opera houses as La Scala in Milan and the Metropolitan in New York. He made many recordings and toured widely, also appearing with the Vienna State, Salzburg, Paris and Edinburgh opera companies.

Some of his best-remembered performances were in Puccini's comic opera Gianni Schicchi and Rossini's William Tell.

Mr. Gobbi starred in six films, mostly operas, including Rigoletto.

He directed productions for the Lyric Opera in Chicago, Covent Garden in London and the Edinburgh Festival, as well as for opera companies in Paris, Venice, Florence and Rome.

He directed an opera workshop for Rosary College in 1974 at the Villa Schifanolia in Florence.

Mr. Gobbi won musical honors in many countries, including Portugal, Britain and Italy, and was an honorary member of Britain's Royal Academy of Music.
