He performed and produced works by playwright Abraham Goldfaden such as "Shmendrick and the Fanatic," or the "Two Kuni-Lemls (Fools)," which introduced a character, 'Shmendrick,' whose name has entered the American lexicon as a synonym for bumbler. He appeared in early silent motion pictures, such as "The Jewish Crown" (1915), "Here Ye, Israel" (1915), and "Period of the Jew" (1915). He married actress Bessie Baumfeld-Kaufman in 1891, and was the grandfather of famed conductor Michael Tilton Thomas. He was also the uncle of actor Paul Muni.
