ABILENE, Kansas -- A landmark in Dickinson County went up in flames Wednesday night.All three floors of the Kirby House Restaurant were engulfed in the fire.No one was inside when the blaze started. The restaurant had closed early in the afternoon because of the developing winter storm.The Kirby House is an Italianate mansion, which is now a restaurant.It attracts visitors from around the area.
The loss of the restaurant is a shock to the community."You know, that's kind of what Abilene is known for, its famous restaurant here," said Chancy Smith, Dickinson County Emergency Manager. "It had really good food, it's going to be sad."Smith believes the restaurant will be a complete loss.The Kirby was built in 1885 by banker Thomas Kirby on the original site of the J.G. McCoy home. McCoy brought the cattle industry and the Chisholm Trail to Abilene.
