Italian President. He served as the fifth President of he Italian Republic from 1964 to 1971. He was a moderate socialist who split from the Italian Socialist Party in 1947 out of concern over its close alliance with the Communists. He founded the Socialist Italian Workers Party, which would soon become the Italian Democratic Socialist Party. Before becoming President he served as Foreign Minister from 1963 to 1964.
