Herman Hartfiel, son of Gottfried Hartfiel and Augusta nee Sommerfeld, was born in Germany Feb. 3, 1879. Herman was two years of age when his parents left Germany and moved to Peru, Illinois. Herman spent his early youth here. Herman spent his early youth here.
At approximately the age of 17 he left home and settled in Miltona township, Minn., area where he started to farm the present Herbert Hartfiel place. while here he married Wilhelmina Raap. this took place Dec. 6, 1907. Later the young couple moved to North Dakota and were engaged in farming there for three years. Eventually they returned to Minnesota and made their home on the present Walter Hartfiel farm.
Mrs. Hartfiel (Wilhelmina) died in February 1933.
As Herman grew older and had to retire from active physical labor he stayed with his son, Walter, for many years and also spent some time with his daughter Lillian.
After a lengthy stay in the Parkers Prairie hospital and Douglas County hospital he entered the Bethany Home in Alexandria, Minn. He died here June 8, 1968 at the age of 89 years. He is survived by his children: Alfred Hartfiel, Alexandria; Walter Hartfiel, Parkers Prairie; Erwin Hartfiel, Circle Pines; and Lillian (Mrs. Clarence Bettermann), St. Cloud; 19 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren; also one brother, Fred Hartfiel, Miltona.
His parents, 1 brother Julius, 4 sisters and Augusta Hartfiel, amelia Gesell and Emma Diedrich preceded him in death. One daughter, Anna, died in infancy.
Funeral services were held at St. Paul's Lutheran church, Miltona township, June 12, 1968, the Rev. Karl F. Lassanske officiating. Interment in St. Paul's Lutheran cemetery. Casket bearers were Gustav Diedrich, Jr., Lawrence Gesell, Clarence Raap, Sylvester Gesell, Clarence Diedrich and Herbert Hartfiel.
