Roman Catholic Cardinal. Amiens born Jacques-Paul Martin earned a licentiate in letters from the University of Strasbourg before heading to Rome where he entered the French Seminary and attended the Pontifical Gregorian University between 1929 and 1936. Furthering his studies at the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy in Rome and at the Pontifical Lateran University, earning a doctorate in canon law, he was ordained priest on October 14, 1934. Joining the Vatican Secretariat of State in 1938, he was named Privy Chamberlain Supernumerary on June 2, 1941 and Domestic Prelate of His Holiness on June 20, 1951. Canon of the chapter of the Patriarchal Vatican Basilica and Protonotary Apostolic Supernumerary, on January 5, 1964 he was elected bishop of the titular see of Neapoli di Palestina, receiving his episcopal consecration on the following February 11 at the Patriarchal Vatican Basilica from Cardinal Paolo Marella. Appointed prefect of the Papal Household on April 9, 1969, he was promoted to the personal title of archbishop on his retirement on December 18, 1986. A familiar figure in the Vatican for five decades alongside six Pontiffs, who organized many of the Papal trips and traveled with them to the respective destinations, controlling access to the Pope through private audiences, in the consistory of June 28, 1988, Martin was created cardinal deacon with the deaconry of Sacro Cuore di Cristo Re by Pope John Paul II. Suffering from heart trouble in later years, the Cardinal died on September 27, 1992 at the Vatican City due to a severe heart attack which resulted fatal. Originally buried in the chapel of the canons of St. Peter's Basilica inside the Campo Verano Cemetery of Rome, his remains were transferred to the Basilica of Sacro Cuore di Cristo Re in Rome on December 2, 1997.
