He began his career wrestling in high school and in the U.S. Navy. Returning to his birthplace of Columbus OH, he was first spotted by promoter Al Haft who encouraged him to turn pro. In Chicago, he shortened his professional name to "Borne". He wrestled throughout the US and Mexico in the 1950's, predominantly in Texas and Oregon, and eventually settled in the area of Portland, Oregon by the early 1960's. Many of his matches were televised at the dawn of televised wrestling. Through his career, he won several heavyweight championships and prevailed in over two dozen tag-team win titles in multiple regional wrestling localities across the U.S.A. Borne was known for his constant distracting chattering in the ring, as well a few patented moves: rubbing his beard into the opponent's eyes, his "solar plexus" punch, a reverse chinlock and his "bombs-away jump" off the top rope. During the mid 1960's, Borne formed a wrestling partnership with Lonnie Mayne that continued on and off until Mayne's untimely death in 1978 at age 33. By 1981, Borne himself had enough of wrestling and retired from the ring. He continued on in a successful real estate business as the proprietor of Cinderella Realty and also focused his efforts in mentoring the upcoming wrestling career of his son, Matt Borne. He was often called "Tough" Tony Borne, a nickname he bore to the end of his life at age 84.
