Artist. His art was focused primarily on Middle East landscapes that became very popular in France and Italy. Following the death of his father, he was raised by an uncle who was a painter and influenced him to pursue the same interest. He furthered his education at the Academy of Fine Arts in Parma, Italy and in 1851 he continued his studies at Geneva, Switzerland and Paris, France. In 1855 he travelled to the Middle East as a draftsman and many of his drawings were the basis of his paintings. Among the honors and awards bestowed upon him include the Medal of Honor for Painting (France), the Legion of Honor (France), and the Order of Saints Maurice and Lazarus (Italy). Many of his works reside in art museums and galleries all over Italy and the US, including the Art Gallery of Chicago, the Pennsylvania Academy of Arts in Philadelphia, and the National Gallery of Parma, Italy.
