Theatre director. Former pupil of actor and theatre director Charles Dullin, Vilar became famous in 1947 when he created the theatre festival of Avignon. He also put his energy in making theatre accessible to greatest possible number of spectators, and founded the Théâtre National Populaire ("Popular National Theatre").He was a French actor of theater and cinema, a director, a theater director and author. Creator of the Festival of Avignon in 1947 which he directed until his death and director of the National Popular Theater (TNP) from 1951 to 1963.
