Called Rita, she was the daughter of Joseph Dudley and Marcella née Vereker Dudley, of 22 Elgin Road, Ballsbridge, Dublin. Her father was a Solicitor
In 1952 she married Fianna Fáil politician Erskine Childers in Paris, France. They met through her work as an attaché in the British Embassy in Dublin. They had 1 child, daughter Nessa Marie born 1956.
In 1973, her husband was elected as the 4th Uachtarán na hÉireann. Erskine and Rita Childers redefined the modern presidency when they accepted invitations to travel around the country making speeches and meeting and greeting local organizations and ordinary people. After her husband's sudden death in office, she was seriously considered for the presidency herself, almost becoming the 1st female Uachtarán na hÉireann.
Rita Childers passed away at Carysfort Nursing Home in Gleneageary, Co Dublin after living many years in Clonskeagh.
✞ The former First Lady of the Republic of Ireland Rita Childers is buried at the graveyard on the church grounds at Derralossy, Co. Wicklow. Buried with her are her husband Uachtarán na hÉireann Erskine H. Childers as well as her husband's 1st wife Ruth Childers.
