She attended schools at North Logan, South Cache High and Utah State University, graduating in 1947 where she earned a certificate in Elementary Education with a Music minor.
She married Kenneth George Bateman March 19, 1947, in the Logan Temple. They lived in Logan for two years where daughter Janet was born, then moved to Rock Springs, Wyo., where son, Evan Kenneth and daughter, Nedra were born. They stayed for 13 years and had a close-knit group of friends. In 1961 they moved to Salt Lake City, where Afton later worked at Frost's Book Store. She loved meeting people and many customers became lifelong friends.
She was an active member of the LDS Church and began her life of church service at the age of 12. She was a great teacher of children and spent many years teaching Primary, Young Women and Relief Society on local and stake levels. She and Ken served a 2 ½ year service mission at the Temple Department Special Services, a wonderful experience for them. He passed away in June 2010.
She was a talented and creative quilter, crocheter and enjoyed many crafts, making dozens of items that were given to family, neighbors and friends for all occasions. She especially loved making a special afghan for each grandchild for their 18th birthdays. She also made appliqué, patchwork and embroidered quilts for their weddings. She kept a sewing basket by her chair, doing handwork while she rested and any other spare minutes she found during the day.
She was predeceased by her husband of 64 years in 2011; son Evan in 2001; grandchildren: Jared Andrew Soulier, twins Aubrey & Ashley Bateman, Brooke Bateman; brothers Kenneth and Rodney Nyman; sisters Marjorie Hill (Willard) and Edith Gunnell (Frank).
She is survived by her daughters, Janet Soulier (Steve) of North Logan, Utah and Nedra Platt (A. Jay) of Holladay, Utah. Also daughter-in-law Kristine Bartel of Grant, Idaho, 14 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren with two on the way. Two special people became as family to them - Denise Newsome Merrill and Fred Behle.
Afton's wish to stay in her own home was made possible by the loving care of Sherrie Clark and Carlie Dixon from Bristol Hospice and the Foothill 6th Ward Relief Society sisters.
There will be a visitation but no viewing as she handmade a beautiful embroidered quilt to cover her casket.
The visitation will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, April 1, at the Larkin Mortuary Sunset Lawn, 2250 E. 1300 South in Salt Lake City, with a brief memorial program at 7:30. A graveside service will be at 11:00 a.m. in the Logan Cemetery 900 N. 1200 East, Logan, Utah.
