The Howard Street Cemetery which has two portions: the older, historic section and the north section, or the Kizer Cemetery, named for the family from whom the land was purchased. The original section is 18.65 acres and the active North section is 21.71 acres.
The Old Burying Ground is directly behind the Unitarian Church. It is set off on two sides by a metal rod fence. There is a parking lot on the Pleasant Street Ext. behind the church, but it is a better choice to enter the cemetery and take the right hand driveway up to the burying ground. From the cemetery driveway, there is a map and index for the celestial residents of the burying ground. It was established sometime between 1745-1750 after a throat distemper epidemic struck the town and the first children to perish were buried there. It is listed in MACRIS as NBO.801, "The Old Howard Street Burial Ground"; MACRIS considers the remainder of the cemetery to be an extension of the burying ground.
The remainder of the Howard Street cemetery stretches north along Howard Street. Many family plots have markers as old as those in the Old Burying Ground section. There is no map or index at the cemetery to indicate where they are.
