Located at the present site of the Diamond Chain Company, there is no trace of this cemetery today.
The first public cemetery in Indianapolis was established in 1821. Called the City Cemetery, it was located on Kentucky Avenue near the White River. In 1834, Union Cemetery was established on the eastern border of the City Cemetery and, circa 1838, the Greenlawn addition was made. By the 1870s, the combined cemetery was more commonly as referred to as Greenlawn. With the 1864 opening of Crown Hill Cemetery, Greenlawn fell into disuse, though it appears that there were still burials there until its closing in 1890. By that year, many of the earlier burials (including many notables in the early Indianapolis history) had already been moved to other cemeteries, mostly Crown Hill, Floral Park, and Holy Cross. Many other burials were lost to White River flooding, grave robbers & cemetery mismanagement. There are few actual burial records (the on-site records were reportedly destroyed in a fire circa 1886), but it is known that Daniel Shaffer was the first burial (in mid-August 1821).
In 1866, Union Civil War burials at Greenlawn were relocated to Crown Hill National Cemetery. The Confederate Civil War burials were relocated to Crown Hill Cemetery Section 32 (Confederate Mound) between 1928 and 1931.
