Wherever the British Empire went, the sons of Scotland thrived. Scotsmen came to Ceylon (present day Sri Lanka) as military men, colonial administrators, bankers, merchants, engineers, teachers and missionaries. However, it was as tea and coffee estate managers in the Hill Country that Scots men and women predominated. To this day, many of the tea estates bear the names bestowed to them by their former owners: among them Glenloch, Melfort, Blair Atholl, Strathspey, Braemar, Sanquhar and Midlothian.
A Scots Kirk (Presbyterian) congregation was formally established in Kandy in 1845. The building for this simple and peaceful church was raised in 1864 from funds collected by Scottish planters and managers from the neighbouring coffee and tea estates. It remains a quiet oasis, away from the chaos of the surrounding streets.
