Born Dingaan Bongane Thobela, he grew up during South Africa's apartheid era. He took up boxing during his youth and went on to amass 80 wins as an amateur, prior to turning professional in 1986. He won 28 contests before suffering his first defeat in 1993. In 1990, he won his first championship belt when he captured the WBO Lightweight Title and three years later, he defeated American fighter Tony Lopez for the WBA Lightweight Title. He compiled a 40 win (26 knockout), 14 loss and 2 draw record.
