The second child of Enrico Gnocchi and Clementina Pasta, Mario was born in San Colombano al Lambro, Milan, in 1899. He had an elder brother, Andrea, who died at the age of 20 in 1915, and Carlo, who became a priest in 1925. The latter served as military chaplain of the Alpini during the Second World War. After the tragic experience of the war, he strove to ease the wounds of suffering and misery created by the war, devoting himself to the "mutilated" and to invalid children of the war and civilians, establishing for them a vast network of colleges in many cities of Italy.

Don Carlo was beatified on October 25, 2009, in Milan, by Cardinal Dionigi Tettamanzi.
