Most Rev. Leo R. Smith, 58, had been the Bishop of the Diocese of Ogdensburg, New York, for five months at the time of his death.
Bishop Smith was the son of Adam and Mary Jane O'Neil Smith. He attended Canisius College, Buffalo and then the Angelicum University, and the Urban College of Propaganda, both in Rome Italy. He was ordained a priest of the Diocese of Buffalo, New York on December 21, 1929 in Rome, Italy.
He received a doctorate in canon and civil law in 1932. At his return to Buffalo, he was assistant pastor of St. Joseph New Cathedral, Buffalo until 1934 and became assistant chancellor of the diocese that year. He also served as diocesan director of the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine (1935-1941) and of youth activities (1941-1946). He was named chancellor of the diocese in 1946 and Vicar General in 1953.
He was appointed auxiliary Bishop of Buffalo on June 30, 1952 and remained until 1963, when he was appointed bishop of Ogdensburg, New York in May of that year.
Bishop Smith had been administrator of the Diocese of Buffalo after Bishop Joseph Burke died in 1962, while at the first session of the Second Vatican Council.
Bishop Smith was appointed Bishop of Ogdensburg shortly after that and died while attending the second session of the Second Vatican Council He had suffered a heart attack and died a few days after that.
