DURHAM, NC - Mrs. Sara Kathryn Vassey Frick, 87, a resident at Croasdaile Village, died peacefully at Hock Family Pavilion Hospice of Duke, on April 9, 2012. She will always be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, educator, and friend who inspired others with her unfailing positive attitude and concern for others.
Mrs. Frick was born November 4, 1924, in Cowpens, SC, the daughter of the late Alice Hammett Vassey and Charles Turner Vassey. She is also preceded in death by her husband, Cecil Blair Frick Jr.; her daughter, Kathryn Frick Moore; and her sister, Joyce V. Jones.
In 1945 Mrs. Frick graduated from Winthrop College in Rock Hill, SC, where she received a B.S. degree in biology. After WW II she married Cecil Blair Frick Jr. of Clifton, SC, on June 8, 1946, and moved to Clemson, SC, where she worked in the Chemistry Department at Clemson University. During their 56 years of marriage, Sara and Cecil enjoyed living and making many dear friends in Laurinburg, NC; Adak, AK; Mt. Holly, NC; and Winston-Salem, NC. Mrs. Frick taught biology in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools for 30 years before her retirement, and Cecil and Sara's move to Durham in 1986. Following her husband's death in 2002, Mrs. Frick was a resident of Croasdaile Village.
Mrs. Frick was a lifelong Methodist. She grew up in the Salem Methodist Church in Cowpens, SC, and through the years was a member of First Methodist Church in Mt. Holly, NC, Maple Springs United Methodist Church in Winston-Salem, NC, Glendale Heights United Methodist and Aldersgate United Methodist churches in Durham. Mrs. Frick loved the work and fellowship she had with the United Methodist Women (UMW) throughout her life. She faithfully served the UMW, holding leadership positions at the local, district, and state levels of the Eastern NC United Methodist Church Conference. She enjoyed many years volunteering her time to support the Lord's work in the Methodist Retirement Homes in eastern North Carolina. She felt blessed to have the opportunity to serve with others within the Croasdaile Village Women's Auxiliary.
She leaves to cherish her memory: daughter and son-in-law, Alice and John Hagaman of Durham; two granddaughters, Amy Hagaman Cockerham and her husband, Brent, of Tega Cay, SC, and Meredith Moore Steadman and her husband, Cary, of Chesapeake, VA; and three great-grandchildren, Kathryn Blair Steadman, Ryan Blair Cockerham and Andrew Harrison Cockerham.
