Arlo Engel Mildenstein, age 85, of Emporia, KS, formerly of Garwin, died Sunday, April 11, 2010 at Holiday Resort in Emporia, KS. Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 16, 2010 at 11:00 AM at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Tama with Pastor Phil Borleske officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Tama. Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 15 from 4 to 7 PM at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama.

Arlo was born on November 11, 1924 in Garwin, IA, the son of Hugo and Christine (Engel) Mildenstein. He graduated from Garwin High School. Arlo served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II, during which he was a Purple Heart recipient. He was united in marriage to Virginia Kriegel on August 5, 1946 in Tama, IA. Arlo was a plant supervisor with IBP until his retirement. He was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church and was active in several veterans' organizations in Emporia. In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing, hunting, and gardening.

Preceding him in death were his parents; and two sisters, Leila Boldt and Maxine Swyers.

Survivors include his wife of 64 years Virginia of Emporia, KS; one son, Arlo J. Mildenstein of Topeka, KS; two granddaughters, Saunja Mildenstein and Tamara Cline; and two great-grandchildren, Elli and Connor Cline.

A memorial fund will be established in his name at Messiah Lutheran Church.
