Born 25 May 1871 in California to Daniel Webster and Augusta (Chapin) Sylvester. Received B.S. in 1895 from University of California, Berkeley. Additional education at U. of Minnesota in mining and geology. Married Alice Pierce in Chicago, Illinois on 16 Nov 1899. Topographer for the US Geological Service from 1897 - 1907. Forest Supervisor of the Wenatchee National Forest from 1908 -1931, mapping much of the area. Is credited with first ascents of several mountains in the region. Named over 1,000 natural features in the area.

Died as a result of an accident in the mountains on 14 September 1944 in Wenatchee, Chelan County, Washington.

There is a lengthy Wikipedia article on him. I was just running down all the Chapin cousins and didn't know how famous he is. For me, part of the fascination is how many of the cousins were named "Albert Hale" which was after my ancestor who married into the family. submitted by: Carol
