Mrs. Frances Powell, Civic Worker; Husband Founded Muffler Company
Mrs. Frances M. Powell, of 17 Faxton St., widow of Herbert S. Powell, died Tuesday in Children's Hospital.
She was born in New Hartford, daughter of George and Phebe Ferguson Hatfield. In 1913 she was married to Mr. Powell in New Hartford. He was founder, president and treasurer of the Powell Muffler Co. Mr. Powell died in 1954.
Mrs. Powell attended schools in Utica and was graduated from Vassar College in 1902.
From 1918 to 1943 she was a member of the Case Conference Committee of Associated Charities (now Family Service Society) and from 1925 to 1942 was a member of its board of directors. Upon retirement she was made an honorary member of the board.
Since 1923 Mrs. Powell has been an active member of the board of managers of the Sunset Home, serving for several years as first vice president.
She was a member of Oneida Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution and a member of the New Century Club. She also was a member of the Mohawk Vallley Vasser Club and the American Association of University Women and the Y.W.C.A.
Mrs. Powell was a member of Park Baptist Church, a teacher in its Sunday School and was active in missionary work. For several years she was president of the Missionary Society of Oneida Baptist Association and served as the first president of the White Cross Society of the Baptist Churches of the Utica area.
In 1927 Mrs. Powell organized the committee to make arrangements for the first Day of Prayer which has since been held annually under the auspices of the Utica Council of Church Women.
She served as trustee of Tabernacle Church from 1931 to 1935. During World War I and II, Mrs. Powell was active in the surgical dressing branch of the Red Cross.
She leaves two foster sons, Emil A. Hill and William Hill, New Hartford.
The funeral will be at 2 Friday from her late residence. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery.
Calling hours at her residence will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 tomorrow. Arrangements are by the Surridge & Roberts Memorial Home.
