Husband of Nancy Ann Gibson Slavens, son of Thomas M. Slavens and Lucy Perks Slavens. John Wesley Slavens was born in Lincoln County, Missouri. He married Nancy Ann Gibson January 20, 1848 when he was about 21 years old. Their daughter Mary Susan Slavens was born December 18, 1848 and their sons Thomas Harvey on June 29, 1850 and Jessie on April, 1851. Nancy Ann died on January 20, 1852, and John Wesley married as his second wife Nancy Elizabeth McCoy @ 1853. John Wesley Slavens enlisted in Company B, 2nd (Burbridge's) Missouri Infantry Regiment, CSA during the Civil War. According to older family members, he served as a Chaplain during the Civil War. The Bible he carried during the Civil War was in the possession of Steven John Crockett. John Wesley Slavens donated several acres of land for a Methodist Church at Troy, Lincoln County, Missouri. The church that was built was called Slavens Chapel. A photo exists of the church, but it was struck by lightning in 1927 and burned to the ground. The cemetery remains nearby.
