Sara "Sally" Latimer Clay was born in Atlanta, Georgia, to Alexander Stephens "Steve" Clay III and Sara Lowe "Sally" Latimer Clay. She was a member of the prominent Clay family, which included her great-grandfather, Senator Alexander Stephens Clay, great uncle General Lucius D. Clay, and cousin Lucius D. Clay, Jr.

Before her first marriage, to Dr. Glenville A. Giddings, she graduated from Sweet Briar College in Virginia and was a teacher at the Westminster Schools in Atlanta.

Both of her parents died in plane crashes. Her father, attorney Steve Clay, was killed in a plane crash in West Virginia 1945. Her mother, Sally Latimer Benson, was killed in the infamous Air France Flight 007 in Orly, France, which was carrying 122 passengers, including 106 who were patrons of the arts in Atlanta. Her stepfather, Dr. Marion T. Benson, Jr., died of a stroke after he learned the news of his wife's death.

She was married three times. First to Dr. Glenville A. Giddings, of Atlanta; then to James M. Vance of Webster Groves, Missouri; and finally to H. Jackson Daniel of St. Louis, Missouri.

The year before her death, Mrs. Daniel earned a Master's degree in Social Work from Washington University in St. Louis.

Mrs. Daniel died suddenly at the age of 40 after jumping from the third floor balcony of her home in St. Louis. She was survived by five children.
