Artist. He became part of Santa Barbara's developing artists' colony of the 1910s and '20s. He used pen, pencil, charcoal and oil to make landscapes and portraits of local, national and international notables and every day persons to much acclaim. The Santa Barbara Historical Society has had several exhibits of Mattei's works.

Son of Felix Mattei and Lucy Fischer, owners of Mattei's Tavern in Los Olivos.
