Mattingly went to Newcastle in 1914 and worked in the coal mines. When the mine closed in 1920, he was employed by a railroad. He retired in 1935.

Survived by widow; three daughters - Mrs. C.C. Farabee of Dallas, Mrs. W.J. Morris of Athens, Mrs. Joe Stewar of Pineville, KYt; brother - R.L. Mattingly of Kentucky, sister - Mrs. Mary Sizemore of Indiana.

NOTE: IF there is a Sarah Susan Mattingly Smith (Mem ID 146266262) listed as a sibling of John Lucas Mattingly's, this is INCORRECT. Neither was she a daughter of Jesse & Mary Jane Asher Mattingly. She was the daughter of William & Alice Bowling Mattingly's son John who married a woman whose surname was Johnson. It is NOT known where this John Mattingly was buried as the family story is that he was killed during/after the Civil War by marauders/a Quantrill-type gang. It is HIS daughter Susan Mattingly (born January 28, 1866, died February 26, 1938) that was married to William "Black Bill" Sizemore & Lincoln Abraham Smith.
