George was a Russian and Italian aristocrat and held a title of "Baron."

Coming to the U.S., he lived in New York and was a columnist for the "N.Y. Journal of American Society," as well as representing a man of accomplishment and style in "The Man in the Hathaway Shirt" -- the nationally known ad campaign created by advertising mogul David Ogilvy [see memorial] (and who,in supposition, probably met the Baron in Paris twenty years before). The Hathaway shirt ad was first published in the "New Yorker" magazine and in national newspapers in 1951, and was a huge sales success based on the premise that the male public disliked the aristocracy, but really always wanted to be one of them.

The Baron, who wore the gimmick of an intriguing black eye patch in the ads, resigned as its model in 1961.

He died of a heart attack at age 65.

Russian aristocrat and onetime New York Journal-American society columnist, who made advertising history in 1951 when he donned an eyepatch (though he had 20/20 vision) and posed as the original "man in the Hathaway shirt."
