Thursday, says the Carson Tribune, Mrs. Winston received the good news by telegram that a son had been born to her daughter, Mrs. Van Dyke (nee Laura Winston) at San Diego. Friday morning another dispatch came bearing the sad intelligence that Mr. W. S. Van Dyke, the husband and father, in the midst of his joy over the safe arrival of an heir, had suddenly died from heart trouble.
Daily Nevada State Journal Sunday, March 24,1889, Reno,Nevada, p3, c2
Contributed by Eugene Eggers:
Woodbridge Strong Van Dyke I, during his young adulthood, and while only 27 when he died, was a noted lawyer and pianist within San Diego (CA)local area. He earlier married Laura Winston, an repertory actress, and they had a male child that was born on March 21, 1889, several days after his untimely death (I believe from pneumonia, but not certain that this was the actual cause of death). In honor of her recently deceased husband, Laura named their son:
Woodbridge Strong Van Dyke II. This son was later to become a famous American movie director during the Golden Age of Cinema.
His son: Woodbridge Strong Van Dyke II, FAG #19787
