B-24H #41-28605 took off, with a crew of 11, from Grottaglie, Italy on a bombing mission over Udine, Italy. They were attacked by enemy aircraft, shot down, and crashed near Udine, Italy during the war. Six of the crew perished and five survived the crash.

John was "Killed In Action" in this crash during the war.

He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
