Initially he served with Company D, 1st Kentucky Cavalry but he left that Company due to an outbreak of Typhoid and joined Company E, the 3rd Kentucky Volunteers, and served during the Mexican War (1846-1848). It was for this military service that his headstone was provided by the US government.
He married Mary Frances Clendenen, on the 27th of October, 1854. He was 28. The marriage took place near her home at North Middletown, Bourbon County, Kentucky
He moved with his wife and family from Harrison county, Kentucky to the Hancock co. area, Indiana where he farmed.
By 1860, he was about 37. He farmed with his family in Brandywine township, Hancock co., Indiana
During the Civil War, he served with both the 5th Regiment, Indiana Cavalry, Company: G (90th Regiment, Indiana Volunteers) and the 6th Indiana Cavalry Regiments during the Civil War.
His home in 1870 was still in Brandywine township, Hancock, Indiana.
Ten years later, 1880, this Pope family had moved to Illinois. We find him listed in the census of 1880 along with his wife and two of his children (Florence and Lucius) as a farmer in a township '9-11', in Greene county, Illinois, near his cousin Jasper N. Pope who is also farming there.
There is notation for W A Pope listing 300 KY Civil War but this is probably a misreading of the headstone.
