Politician and leader of the Italian Communist Party from 1927 until his death. He was Minister of Justice (1945 to 1946), member of the Constituent Assembly of Italy (1946 to 1948) and Member of the Italian Chamber of Deputies Legislatures I, II, III and IV (1948 to 1964).
He died as a result of cerebral haemorrhage while vacationing with his companion Nilde Iotti in Yalta, then in the Soviet Union.
