Colonel Richard J. Hinton was an abolitionist and associate of John Brown (Harper's Ferry), and noted journalist, author and politician. In 1862 he recruited volunteers for the First Kansas Colored Infantry Regiment. He wrote the first campaign biography of Abraham Lincoln and was known as "Lincoln's Reluctant Biographer." After the war he held several politically-appointed positions within the federal government and resumed his journalism career, continued to lecture around the country, and wrote several books, including a biography of his friend, poet Richard Realf. In 1894 his book "John Brown and His Men" was published. He was very involved in radical politics including the early Progressive Labor Party and the Social Democracy Party. He died in December 1901 while on a business trip to London, England. He had two sons, George F. and Arthur Hinton.
