One of England's best and most successful action directors of the '30s. He was educated at Cambridge University where he became the president of both the Liberal Club and the Cambridge Union Society. His best known movies in those categories, respectively, are Tudor Rose, King Solomon's Mines, 1937 version with Paul Robeson, and Non-Stop New York. As Alfred Hitchcock, he was signed by David O. Selznick in 1939 and went to America, but he never made a movie for Selznick during the 10 years he was under contract. During the same period, he directed "Tom Brown's School Days" featuring Cedric Hardwicke, "Back Street" starring Margaret Sullavan, "Jane Eyre" with Orson Welles, among others. During World War II, Hollywood producer Frank Capra recruited him to co-produce documentaries for the United States War Department, including a film covering the liberation of Rome. He joined the Disney organization in 1957, and became their top filmmaker in live-action films, directing at least a half-dozen Disney classics and another half-dozen confirmed hits over the next 20 years.

Born in Buxton, Derbyshire, England, UK, married to Actress Anna Lee from 1933 to 1944 and father of the Actress Venetia Stevenson, he began his career in the 1920s as Writer. From the 1930s worked as Director and Producer in several Motion Pictures and TV series. His TV series include over 26 episodes of "Disneyland" (1957-1982).
