Elizabeth McGee (sometimes spelled McGhee) was the daughter of Nancy McGee, originally of Kentucky, and a father who was deceased before 1850. In 1850, Nancy McGee was the head of a household in Pulaski County, Illinois, consisting of Patrick H., Francis M., Christopher, Nancy A. and Elizabeth, age 8.

In about 1859-1860, Elizabeth married an ambitious and educated Scotsman, John Franklin McCartney. They became the parents of two children: Jane Elizabeth (or Elizabeth J.) and Marcus Neely.

John enlisted in the Union Army during the Civil War, and Elizabeth passed away in his absence, on 16 Sep 1864, at the age of 22.

John Franklin McCartney is buried at Masonic Cemetery in Metropolis, Massac County, Illinois, as are their two children, Elizabeth McCartney Shaffer Stroud and Marcus Neely McCartney.
