obit "The DeRuyter Gleaner", May 11, 1939
Mrs. Minerva Brown, 81, former resident of DeRuyter and South Otselic, died Saturday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Julian M. Craft, Smyrna, with whom she had resided for many years past. Deceased was the daughter of Charles and Cynthia (s/b Celinda) Church Babcock, and was born near South Otselic, January 15, 1858. She was married to Frank. B. Brown, July 3, 1878, and they resided on a farm in Otselic township until 1907, when they came to DeRuyter, where they made their home until Mr. Brown's death, some years ago. Surviving are six daughters: Mrs. M. J. Loomis and Mrs. G. E. Johnson of DeRuyter; Mrs. Clarence Hawley and Mrs. J. M. Craft of Smyrna; Mrs. Harold Landsman of Detroit, Mich., and Mrs. Frances Preston of Syracuse; a son, Clayton W. Brown of New Woodstock; two sisters, Mrs. Rose Messenger of McGraw and Mrs. Fred L Brown of DeRuyter, and a brother, Charles Babcock of Syracuse. A daughter, Grace, died in 1906, and a son, Carl, passed away last year. She also leaves several grand and great-grandchildren. A true eulogy could be written of this truly wonderful mother whose remarkable Christian fortitude enabled her to bear up under conditions seldom encountered in real life. Private funeral services were held at the Craft home at 1 o'clock Tuesday, Rev. Neal Mills officiating, assisted, by Rev. J. S. Lowman. Burial was made in the family plot in Valley View Cemetery, South Otselic.
