On 8 Feb 1838 then Governor R. K. Call nominated him as Judge of the County Court. He was one of the promoters of the Chipola Canal in 1828 to link the river with St. Andrews Bay. In 1833, he was appointed by Territorial Governor John H. Eaton to ensure land sale between S. Brown and Appalachicola Tustenugge Hadjo. He treated the Indian fairly. He was the Jackson County Representative in 1838 to the Florida 1st Constitutional Convention. In 1840 he was Speaker of the House.
