August was born in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, son of Fredrick Behr, who followed his sons to this country and died here. His mother died in Germany. August was baptized & confirmed in the Lutheran faith in Germany and continued his devotion after coming to this country. He attended school in Germany and learned in that line of work coming to America. After locating at Clinton, IA he worked in a mill there.

In 1884 he was united in marriage with Anna Johanna Tadsen at Clinton. To this union were born five children; Chris, Kate, Sanke, Fred, & Andrew. Anna passed away in 1896 & was buried in Teeds Grove, IA. In May 1898 August was united in marriage with Wilhelmina Wessel, who had 3 children from a previous marriage, Henry Wessel, Mary Jacobs, & George. George took his step-father's last name. August & Wilhelmina had five children; Harry, Edna Goins, Millie Bucher, Dorothy Bender, & Edwin.

After living 3 years at Clinton the Behrs moved to the farm three miles east of Fulda and the following year living on an adjoining farm. In 1912, the Behrs purchased the farm 7 miles southwest of Fulda, where they resided 10 years before they retired and moved to a home in town in 1922.

August's daughter, Dorothy, & her husband, Fredrick, drove down from Henderson to get August so he could spend a few days with them. On Saturday evening they had been on a short fishing trip to Washington Lake, about 25 miles from Henderson. Upon leaving the lake, there was a short incline to climb before reaching the car. When they reached the car, Fredrick noticed August's labored breathing. He suggested August rest a few minutes, but even as he made the suggestion August fell to the ground and died instantly.

August's activities in community work have been numerous, and he held several offices in Seward Township, was a director in the old creamery association, has been connected with the farmers elevator in various offices since it was organized in 1909 and has been president for the past 10 years. He held that office up to the time of his death. He was also on the board of directors of the local farmers store since its inception until 1 1/2 years ago when he resigned. He was a member of the Lutheran school board for several years and was active in all lines of church work at St. Paul Lutheran Church of which he was a loyal and consistent member.

August's siblings include Mrs. J Greve of Lexington, NE, Hans Behr of Clinton. One brother & two sisters preceded August in death, passing away in Germany, & two dying in Clinton, & one brother, Peter, passing away in Fulda.

Funeral services were conducted Wednesday afternoon at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Rev. O.A. Soeldner officiating.
