Padre Umile was born Gianni Bonzi, in Genoa, Italy, on April 21, 1898, and after obtaining a license, he worked within the Credito Italiano and at the Cassa di Risparmio of Genoa, until joining the Order of Franciscan Friars Minor Capuchins in 1918.

Following his priesthood ordination, he obtained a degree from a Roman University and collaborated with several Italian and International reviews. Following the Second World War, he decided to dedicate his Ministry to young orphan and abandoned children, following the destruction of Genoa and opened an institute under the name Sorriso Francescano. The first house was opened on March 19, 1946 in Villa Piuma, upon a hill in Coronata, which was later transferred to Villa Gavotti in Multedo and ultimately to Villa Genuensis again in Coronata, which was opened in 1955.

He organized a band for his children, taking part among others in the famous TV Show, Zecchino d'Oro and in 1960, received the Medaglia d'Oro al Valore Civile from the President of the Italian Republic.

Suffering for years from cardiac complications, Padre Umile passed away at the age of 70, inside Villa Piuma, after a series of long pains. His remains where briefly interred at Staglieno and were later transported to the Capuchin Church of the Santissima Concezione e Padre Santo. His beatification process was opened on June 16, 1993.
