John was born May 14, 1922 in New York. He was KIA on April 16, 1944.
Son of Homer Kittle Leggett & Florence Douglass Leggett.
John served as a 2nd Lt., 315th Fighter Squadron, 324th Fighter Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.
He resided in Chittenden County, Vermont prior to the war.
He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on March 20, 1942 in Rutland, Vermont. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a sailor and/or deckhand and also as Single, without dependents.
John was "Killed In Action" somewhere in the Mediterranean area during the war and was awarded the Purple Heart. He may also have been awarded an Air Medal.

Lt. Leggett received his Primary Flight Training at Tuscaloosa, AL; Basic Flight Training at Walnut Ridge, Arkansas; Advanced Training at Craig Field, Selma, AL.
Lt. John Leggett was raised in NY and graduated from the Poughkeepsie, NY high school June 26, 1941 later moving with his family to Vermont.
He joined the USAAF in 1942 and was awarded his pilot certification on March 25, 1943.
He performed combat duty based out of Berrechid, North Africa and Naples, Italy flying a P-40.
While in Italy on a bombing/strafing run over Monte Cassino April 16, 1944, his plane was hit by artillery fire. He flew the plane safely to the safe zone at the Anzio beach area and jumped clear above the sea. Tragically while floating down in his chute, his plane above still spiraling down collided into him.
Lt. Leggett was awarded the Purple Heart and the Air Medal posthumously.
His personal effects were later shipped to Kansas City Effects Bureau and than to Burlington VT after the war.
