Chicago Tribune Oct 04, 2000
For many of his colleagues, Dr. Frank J. Jirka Jr., 78, of Barrington Hills, the former president of the American Medical Association and the Chicago Medical Society, was an inspiration. He died Monday, Oct. 2, in his home.
Dr. Jirka, who was born in Chicago, served in the Navy for four years during World War II and obtained the rank of lieutenant. He was awarded the Silver Star and Purple Heart after being wounded in the Battle of Iwo Jima and having both of his legs amputated below the knee."Jirka had always been a hero to me because of his courage and integrity," said Lonnie Bristow, who served as AMA president in 1995. "At the time he became AMA president, he was an underdog. He won based upon the sheer strength of his personality."
Dr. Jirka was the third generation of physicians in his family, receiving his medical degree from the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign in 1950. His father and paternal grandfather were physicians, as is his brother. As an intern at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, Dr. Jirka specialized in urology and in 1954 opened his own practice in Berwyn.
He was on the staff at MacNeal Hospital in Berwyn and during the mid-1960s became involved in the Illinois State Medical Society. From 1963 to 1970, he served as its board chairman and in 1973 was the society's president. Over the years, he also became active in the AMA and the Chicago Medical Society.
His penchant for politics was inherited from his maternal grandfather, Anton Cermak, who was elected mayor of Chicago in 1931.
Dr. Jirka encouraged young physicians to become active participants in the associations.
"You would always see Frank sitting in our meetings," said Neil Winston, chairman of the council at the Chicago Medical Society. "He was always encouraging diversity and encouraging women physicians to get involved."
Dr. Jirka served as president of the Chicago Medical Society, Douglas Park Branch, in 1962. From 1976 to 1983 he was a board member. He was an AMA trustee from 1974 to 1982 and was elected AMA president in 1983.
"During his presidency, the AMA started looking hard at the escalation of health-care expenditures," said John Ring, another former AMA president.
Dr. Jirka also was former president of the Suburban Cook County Tuberculosis Sanitarium District and chairman of the Governor's Committee on Employment of the Handicapped in the State of Illinois.
A resident of Barrington Hills for more than 20 years, Dr. Jirka closed his Berwyn practice in 1980 and moved it to Barrington. In 1985 he became medical director at MacNeal Hospital and served in that post until 1990, when he retired.
"He always believed in serving in whatever capacity to do good and not for self-praise," said his wife of 53 years, Patricia.
Other survivors include three daughters, Lynn Sutherland, Mary Schaefer and Ella Jirka Bland; a brother, Anton; and eight grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in Smith-Corcoran Funeral Home, 185 E. Northwest Highway, Palatine. Mass will be said at 12:30 p.m. Thursday in Holy Family Catholic Church, 2515 W. Palatine Rd., Inverness.
